Wolfe Creek Crater
wolfe-creek-crater-image-2
The Wolfe Creek meteorite crater is the second largest crater in the world from which fragments of a meteorite have been collected. The crater is 880 metres across and almost circular. Dating has shown that the meteorite crashed to Earth around 300,000 years ago. It would have weighed more than 50,000 tonnes and is thought to have been travelling at 15 kilometres a second, a speed that would have taken it across Australia in five minutes. The Wolfe Creek meteorite crater was only discovered by Europeans during an aerial survey in 1947. However, it has long been known to Aboriginal people, who called it Kandimalal, and tell of two rainbow snakes who formed the nearby Sturt and Wolfe Creeks as they crossed the desert. The crater is believed to be the place where one snake emerged from the ground.

Bungle Bungles
Bungles21
It's been around for 350 million years and revered by its Aboriginal custodians for 40,000 years. But the striking Bungle Bungle Range in World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park was a secret from the outside world until 1983. Today this maze of orange-and-black striped sandstone domes, often likened to giant beehives, is one of the Kimberley's best-loved attractions. Open during the dry season only - usually April to November (dates vary according to conditions)

China Wall
download
This place acquired its English name because it is somewhat reminiscent of the Great Wall of China. It is known as Burraluba in the Jaru language and as Mulugunjiny in Kija. The family of Chamia Samuel, who lives at Billiluna, are Aboriginal custodians for the story of this place. China Wall is a natural vein of sub-vertical white quartz rising up to 6 metres above the surrounding country in places. This striking formation transects the country for many kilometres, rising high out of the ground and then disappearing back into the earth again. Scientists believe the wall was formed when the rock surrounding the much harder and resistant quartz was weathered and eroded away. Aboriginal people have a different account of how this formation came about.

Caroline Pool
carolines pool
Caroline Pool was once the main recreational spot for the folk of the pioneering era. During the wet season it is ideal for swimming, however, as we move in to the dry it becomes a pleasant picnic spot with a series of small water holes, shady trees and a wide bank which provides the perfect path for bushwalkers.

The site is home to the first gold discovery in WA in 1885. Visit the remnants of the old mud Post Office (a fence and a roof were constructed on 15 February 2002 to preserve the ruins), or have a go at panning for gold. Old Town is, and will continue to be, a historic site of interest for locals and visitors alike. Old Halls Creek also has a pioneer cemetery containing the graves of many Kimberley pioneering families.
